Description: Token, highway token, New Hampshire Turnpike. Circular brass token. Obverse and reverse same design. Image of the Old Man of the Mountain in center. Text around edge: "* NEW HAMPSHIRE * / PUBLIC WORKS AND HIGHWAYS". 1st struck in 1955 - 1956 (additional strikes were made in 1960 & 1963 adding 200,000 more tokens).
Provenance: New Hampshire Department Of Transportation (DOT) highway Old Man of the Mountain tokens were purchased from the Roger Williams Mint in Attleboro, MA or from Osborne Coinage in Cincinnati, OH (note: The Old Man of the Mountain profile rock located in Franconia Notch along I-93 crumbled on May 3, 2003).
Usage: These tokens were used on the F. E. Everett Highway. Acceptance of these tokens in New Hampshie ceased in January 2006 following the installation of the E-ZPass electronic toll system. The state had 15 million surplus tokens weighing 165,000 pounds in January 2006 worth $165,000.00 in metal scrap value. These tokens are no longer available from the state and existing tokens in private hands can no longer be redeemed for cash.
